A growing Chandigarh has left builders and estate developers hungry for land and willing to spend. Aerocity, a township coming up in Mohali, got farmers Rs 1.5 crore an acre. With almost every major builder active in the region, land rates are averaging Rs 65-Rs 70 lakh per acre. Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal is bullish. "Land prices are going up because there is a lot of economic activity in the state. For instance, we have set up a power plant for which we acquire a big chunk of land. This leads to escalation of land prices. But the land owners buy land elsewhere. So it becomes a chain which boosts the state's economy," he says.

Chandigarh, March 20 (IANS) The Punjab government Thursday decided to offer a lump sum compensation of Rs.15 million ($372,671) per acre to farmers whose land will be acquired for the Mohali international airport project, being set up near here. This is the highest-ever compensation being offered for land acquisition by the state government to farmers.
Over 300 acres of land is being acquired by the Punjab government for the international airport project, which is an extension of the civil and defence airport at Chandigarh.
A government spokesman said a compensation of nearly Rs.4.6 billion is expected to be paid to farmers whose land near Mohali town will be acquired.
Giving further concessions, the state cabinet said the affected farmers would also get a waiver of registration fee and stamp duty on the land that they buy in the state with the compensation money.
The land will be acquired within two years.
They would also be entitled for the facility of a power connection for tubewell on priority anywhere in Punjab where they choose to buy land.
The spokesman said that the full amount of compensation would be given to farmers by March 31 this year to speed up the land acquisition project.

Chandigarh, Aug 23 (IANS) Farmers would be given adequate compensation for their lands acquired for setting up a nuclear power plant in Fatehabad district of Haryana, parliament member Ashok Tanwar Monday assured a group of protesting farmers.
The farmers were holding a sit-in outside the mini secretariat at Fatehabad town, over 300 km from here, to protest acquisition of their lands in Gorakhpur-Kumharia village.
Tanwar, MP from Sirsa, told the farmers that all their fears on land acquisition and compensation would be redressed.
“The government of India has sanctioned only one nuclear power plant for the whole of northern India, and this plant would be set up at village Gorakhpur-Kumharia. Nearly 1,400 acres would be acquired and the process of land acquisition has already been started,” Tanwar added.
With the setting up of the power plant, the state would get additional power and it will bring development in Fatehabad area.
“The area of village Gorakhpur and Kumharia would be linked with the whole of the world and a number of new projects would be set up here benefitting the people of this area, including creating jobs,” he added.
The nuclear power plant would be set up at a cost of Rs.12,000 crore.
